After the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, WSL is out of beta and the installation is much easier. To enable WSL, you just need to turn on Windows Subsystem for Linux among Windows Features, and install your preferred distro from the Windows Store. Winbox v3.11 download. If you encounter this problem, you need to shut down your system completely when you want to switch from Windows to Arch:

Hello everyone,
total newbie here so bear with me.
My set-up: I already had sound problems yesterday but messed with the settings too much so the root of my problem became so obscure that I decided to make a fresh install.
Now I'm running Arch Linux from a USB stick next to Windows 10. My setup is still relatively light-weight. I don't have a desktop environment or a log-in manager, I run startx from tty which only executes i3 (with stock settings and urxvt). Just some rudimentary utilities: nouveau nvidia driver, dmenu, vim, wget, yay, git, base-devel among a few other things. Discord for troubleshooting audio since it has a nice overview. Everything up-to-date (sudo pacman -Syu, yay- Syu)Everything worked fine, I booted and immediately installed the alsa-utils and ran speaker-test after making sure everything was unmuted. alsa defaulted to my HDA Intel PCH (Realtek ALCI1220) [Profile: Analog Steroe Duplex]. Everything worked fine, thank god.
I ran chromium and played something from youtube. Worked as well. Then I ventured to get mopidy-spotify + ncmpcpp running. Initially, it worked well but then I had slight issues with the fact that discord and chromium seemed to use pulseaudio while ncmpcpp/mopidy used alsa [chromium was muted when I played audio through ncmpcpp]. I changed my mopidy audio output to pulse and set up pulseaudio for the corresponding port as suggested here. I could then observe both ncmpcpp/mopidy and chromium as independent streams in pavucontrol. To summarize: I was now using mopidy.service next to pulseaudio and everything worked. I have no mpd installed if that makes any difference. I rebooted a few times, making sure the changes persist through boot cycles cause I had a premonition something would go wrong. This is where I left off when I went to sleep.
My problem: The next morning (i.e. today) I booted into Windows 10 did some work and returned to Arch a few hours later (naturally, I did nothing to mess with Arch). But now, I had no audio input anymore. speaker-test didn't work. Not even in tty.
What I tried: I did a ton of trouble-shooting with wiki and other posts and tried a few things:
disable/remove pulseaudio entirely [now re-installed; disabled and triggered by its socket]
disable mopidy
set PCH (device 0 for me) as default in the alsa config
Nothing worked. Weirldy enough, in the boot cycle after which I set device 0 as my default card in asound.rc, I immediately ran pulseaudio -vvv in tty and noticed some errors (no idea what those were). In this situation, speaker-test worked. I ran startx and chromium worked as well; though pavucontrol couldn't connect to the server. I assumed pulseaudio was the culprit so I used pacman -Rdd to remove pulseaudio and rebooted but then I had no audio again.
No idea where to go from here.
Please tell me if I can provide you with any useful outputs. I don't know what could be useful.

AC'97 (short for Audio Codec '97; also MC'97, short for Modem Codec '97) is Intel Corporation's Audio Codec standard developed by the Intel Architecture Labs in 1997, and used mainly in motherboards, modems, and sound cards.
Audio components integrated into chipsets consist of two components: an AC'97 digital controller (DC97), which is built into the I/O Controller Hub (ICH) of the chipset, and an AC'97 audio and modem codecs, which is the analog component of the architecture. AC'97 defines a high-quality, 16- or 20-bit audio architecture with surround sound support for the PC. AC'97 supports a 96 kHz sampling rate at 20-bit stereo resolution and a 48 kHz sampling rate at 20-bit stereo resolution for multichannel recording and playback.
AC97 defines a maximum of 6 channels of analog audio output, whereas HD Audio has the capability to define many more channels but in practice most motherboards only allow for up to 8 channels.
Integrated audio is implemented with the AC'97 Codec on the motherboard, a Communications and Networking Riser (CNR) card, or an audio/modem riser (AMR) card.
In 2004 AC'97 was superseded by Intel High Definition Audio (HD Audio).
AC'97 has had several revision:
- AC'97 1.x compliant indicates fixed 48K sampling rate operation (non-extended feature set)
- AC'97 2.1 compliant indicates extended audio feature set (optional variable rate, multichannel, etc.)
- AC'97 2.2 compliant indicates extended audio, enhanced riser audio support, and optional S/PDIF
- AC'97 2.3 compliant indicates extended configuration information and optional jack sensing support
AC '97 v2.3 enables Plug and Play audio for the end user. This revision provides means for the audio codec to supply parametric data about its analog interface much like Intel High Definition Audio.
